A brown or black color is usually caused by manganese.
It is not considered hazardous however in large quantities can impact the nervous system.
Manganese is a naturally occurring metal that can be found in all kinds of places and is essential to plant and animal life at low levels.
A brown or black color can also be caused by a well running low and picking up some mud. If this is the case, it will generally clear up on its own fairly quickly.
